Wapda crowned National Challenge Cup champions for third straight time

Wapda were crowned champions of the National Challenge Cup on Sunday after they won a tense final 1-0 against Khan Research Laboratories thanks to a late strike by Samnan Qureshi.
Samnan struck four minutes from time, controlling a long pass from Shayek Dost before side-footing it home as Wapda won their third crown in a row.

The goal came after both teams had fought throughout even though clearcut chances were few and far between.

However, two-time champions Wapda eventually proved too strong and after Samnan’s goal held on to clinch victory.

“The moment I got the ball, I only had eyes on the goal,” said Samnan. “The first touch set it up for me.”

Shayek, playing his first tournament game after coming back from suspension, was delighted with his contribution.
“The coach told me that we had to push forward in the dying minutes and try to get a goal,” said Shayek. “I got the ball on the left and saw Samnan making a run, I knew I had to find him.”

Earlier, SA Gardens beat Pakistan Army 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw to clinch third place.
KRL’s Waqar Baloch was awarded the player of the tournament while Wapda’s Ali Raza took the golden boot. Hassan Ali of Wapda was named the best goalkeeper.
